Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari had a warning for Nintendo in a recent interview with the BBC. He claims that Nintendo is on a “Path to Irrelevance” Bushnell is no stranger to this type of situation. The Atari Jaguar failed horribly and he thinks that Nintendo will have the same fate as his company.
He also touched upon handheld gaming and target audiences. “I don’t think handheld game-only devices make sense anymore,” “Not when you have an iPod or an Android microtablet.”
“Nintendo always had a soft spot for young people – they sort of did the 12-and-under pretty well, and the other guys did the 12-and-over.”
“And now I think the other [consoles] are good enough on those things, and the rush to upgrade from the 12-and-under is not nearly as important.”
What do you all think about his statements? Is Nintendo in trouble because of the Wii-U or can they make a comeback and remain the amazing and iconic company that they have been for years? Only time will tell, but Nintendo needs to step up their game if they want to avoid Atari’s fate.
