Today, Microsoft revealed that the Xbox 360 has “reached 80 million consoles sold to retailers worldwide” according to its internal data. Although “sold to retailers” doesn’t mean 80 million people own an Xbox 360 right now, it’s still a feat to behold and it’s only a matter of time before those consoles go off the shelves.
I’d expect to see some big sales from stores to empty out their 360 stock this holiday season to make room for the next generation of consoles, the Xbox One and PS4.
Another feat Microsoft achieved this past month with the Xbox 360 is that it has once again been the top-selling console of the month in the US, which it has held for every month so far in 2013 (1.6 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold in the US so far).
And thanks to Grand Theft Auto V, Xbox 360 software sales reached $401.2 million in the US in September, the console’s strongest September since it launched eight years ago in 2005.
