Update: EA has announced that by the last day of the beta, more than 6 million players participated. Original story follows...
With Battlefield Hardline’s beta coming to an end, Visceral Games and EA are both in number-crunching mode, preparing to run the stats and see what they can improve in the game prior to launch. An interesting figure they’ve uncovered is that more than 5 million people in total have played the beta so far – that’s more than Destiny‘s beta last year, a game hyped to no end.
Visceral Games’ General Manager, and Executive Producer on Battlefield Hardline, Steve Papoutsis took to Twitter to announce the news:
Wow, we’ve passed 5 MILLION players in the #BFHardline beta! So proud of our team. Glad you’re having fun and keep that feedback coming.

To put that into perspective, Activision revealed that Destiny‘s beta saw 4.6 million players participate, smashing records as the biggest console beta for a new IP. To be fair to Bungie’s latest title, Destiny is indeed a new IP, and was only available on consoles, while Battlefield Hardline is part of an existing franchise available on consoles and PC.
So far, thoughts on the beta have been mixed, though the general consensus is pretty positive. Check out our review of the beta for more details.
