According to the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo and popular streaming service, Netflix, are in the early stages of development for a live action series based on one of the most recognizable properties in all of gaming, ‘The Legend of Zelda’.
An unnamed sourced assured The Journal that the production is still very much in its infancy, with writers yet to be found. They did, however, describe the project as “Game of Thrones for a family audience” and mentioned that it will be developed very closely alongside Nintendo.
This news comes as quite a shock, as Nintendo has earned a reputation for being quite possessive of its intellectual property in the new millennium. In all honesty though, who could blame them? Their 20th century forays into film and television were…less than successful, turning out flops like the infamous Super Mario Bros. Movie and a myriad of laughably dated cartoon series (seriously, go look up Captain N, I’ll wait.) Now in an effort to maintain their high standard of quality, Nintendo seems very wary of who it chooses as its bedfellows.
But with this shocking revelation, is it safe to assume that Nintendo is willing to loosen their iron grip? Does this spell the future for even more Nintendo multimedia content in the future? Or will this ambitious project meet with a horrible fate? (Sorry, I couldn’t resist)
Either way, we can expect a lot of fan speculation going forward.
