Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata revealed that an application featuring the company’s Mii player avatars is in the works.
During an interview with Nikkei, Iwata stated that the company remains hesitant to entering the mobile game market.
In the past, I have opposed making smartphone and tablet versions of Nintendo titles. Prices for content aimed at smartphones and tablets are falling quickly. I am still wary of the category. We intend to develop products that will allow customers to identify with Nintendo products and make people pay attention to Nintendo games.
However, Iwata went on to say an app focusing on the Mii characters players create could be appealing to Nintendo fans.
For example, some Nintendo game consoles incorporate Mii, which creates a digital avatar to represent players. It would be fun for players to use their Mii characters as icons on social media. We are currently developing an application that will allow users to do that. The app will be announced around the time our full-year results are released.
The fiscal year for Nintendo ends March 31, so details could come shortly after that.
The rest of the interview saw Iwata stating his belief that the Wii U still has “considerable room for growth” due to its number of upcoming titles, as well as his prediction for a stronger financial performance for Nintendo’s next fiscal year.
