Epic Games’ CEO Tim Sweeney has announced that Unreal Engine 4 will be dropping the $19/month subscription fee and is now completely free to download and use, including the Unreal Engine Marketplace, and “100% of the C++ source code.”
As discussed in Epic Games’ blogpost, all future updates will be available for free as well, a feature previously only available to subscribers. Epic instead will take 5% of a game’s gross revenue after the first $3,000 USD made each quarter.
If you were a previous subscriber, you’ll get $30 USD to spend in the engine’s marketplace and if your subscription is active, you’ll receive a refund of your most recent payment. Are you excited to start using Unreal Engine 4 for free? Let us know in the comments below!
