According to April’s NPD results, the Xbox One outsold the Playstation 4 in the month of April, marking the first time that Microsoft has eclipsed Sony in the “console wars.”
Xbox Marketing Corporate Vice President Mike Nichols was quick to laud this achievement, stating, “As the best-selling console in the US in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month.”
Xbox One enjoyed a sale increase of 63 percent, compared to April sales from 2014; and, globally, the number of Xbox Live users increased by 24 percent.
Not to be outdone by Microsoft’s achievement, Sony quickly released a retaliatory statement, proclaiming “According to NPD, PlayStation continues to lead software sales for April 2015 and PS4 remains the cumulative sales leader in the US. We are looking forward to an amazing E3.”
The current console wars as a whole are shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested battles in gaming history. The same report that announced the Xbox One’s April victory also confirmed that, “After 18 months on the market for Xbox One and PS4, we are seeing cumulative hardware sales over 50 percent higher than the combined sales of Xbox 360 and PS3 at the same point in their lifecycles.”
It seems that as these wars rage on, the playing field between Microsoft and Sony has been leveled just a bit.
