5 ways Sony made you drop your jaw at E3

Sony was the last conference of what can only be described as an extremely long day for everyone in the gaming industry, but the PlayStation E3 press conference did exactly what it had to: it focused on games. Games we were expecting, games that took everyone by surprise, and games that most of us had been long wishing for, but never really believed would happen. Sony arguably brought out more surprises than anyone else and here are some of the best and the biggest.

Games we were expecting, games that took everyone by surprise, and games that most of us had been long wishing for, but never really believed would happen. The Last Guardian is really happening (REALLY!)

When you kick off an E3 press conference with the reveal that The Last Guardian is actually happening (No, really. It is!), then you know you’re in for a hype-inducing hour and a half. While the game doesn’t look drastically different than it did when it was announced in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, it still has an amazing graphical quality and charm that makes games from Team Ico extremely unique and fun (see: Ico, Shadow of the Colussus). The puzzle and platforming elements already displayed between the two characters make for an interesting and special game that many of us have literally been waiting years to see again.

What’s more surprising about the reveal is that it’s slated for a 2016 release. Many assumed, myself included, that when announced, TLG would be making its way to the PS4 sooner, rather than later. As a small bonus, Sony also revealed the title is still being directed by Fumito Ueda. So, is it 2016 yet?

That Uncharted 4 footage…

Yet another game that won’t arrive until the new year, Uncharted 4 closed the show in the only way a show that opened with The Last Guardian could. With jaw-dropping graphics, an epic car chase, and Nathan Drake still being as badass as ever, the latest game from Naughty Dog seems to be the biggest and most open Uncharted game yet. It was ultimately a bittersweet moment knowing this will probably be the last time Nathan Drake makes such a big splash at a Sony E3 conference, but Drake went out the only way a character like his could.

Guerilla wows with their new IP

The newest title from Guerrilla Games is finally headed our way and it looks gorgeous, unique, and a lot different than Killzone. A lot more needs to be known about Horizon: Zero Dawn, but all the elements of a fantastic game are there: an interesting (female!) protagonist, a story that needs to be explored (how do the elements of past and future combine?), and epic robot T-Rex battles with electric arrows. Yes, please?

Shenmue 3 happens (in nine hours!)

Yu Suzuki graced the stage to tell everyone that the fate of Shenmue 3 is in their hands, and they took it seriously. The game, launching on Kickstarter with a goal of $2 million in one month. Before you exit out to rush over to the page – don’t worry. The goal was met in nine hours and is estimated for a release for December 2017. The next iteration in the open world, action-adventure series is the fastest game to ever reach $1 million on Kickstarter, so its safe to say we’re all a little excited for its release.

Final Fantasy VII gets a remake on Sony first

While this remake is technically a “play it FIRST on PlayStation,” its reveal at the Sony press conference is an answer to the prayers that fans of the game have been making for years. The only sad part? It may be a long ways away yet, with Square Enix stating “At Sony Computer Entertainment of America LLC’s (SCEA) E3 press conference today, SQUARE ENIX announced that it has begun production on the full remake of FINAL FANTASY VII for the PlayStation4 computer entertainment system.”

While waiting, waiting, and more waiting seems to be the theme here, Sony certainly delivered on their promise of bringing titles we were all hyped for, and some we didn’t even know were in production. Did the Sony conference leave you with your mouth on the floor? Or did they lose you before it was over?
