First announced back in 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 is the next eagerly anticipated title from CD Projekt Red, the developers of the critically acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Since its early reveal, however, the studio has gone dark, even going so far as to announce that it doesn’t intend to fully reveal the title until 2017.
Many have questioned the company’s decision to hold back on a reveal for that long, claiming it will build unnecessary amounts of hype that will be impossible for the studio to meet.
In response to these concerns, CD Projekt Red’s co-founder and Joint CEO Marcin Iwinski elaborated upon the studio’s current philosophy regarding the game.
“We released the Cyberpunk teaser trailer because we wanted to see how gamers felt about it,” Iwinski explained. “We were super excited about the project internally, but what if it wasn’t the right thing [for us]? But the response has been incredible. Now it’s just up to us to deliver. We’re hard at work on it.”
Iwinski discussed the presence of burnout on the studio developers, with the release of The Witcher 3 only a month ago.
“You can craft swords for 12 years, but you might get burnt out. People might want to leave and go work on something else. We’re excited to switch to guns. We intended to keep [the team] energized with Cyberpunk. The core team is working The Witcher 3’s expansions, but more and more people are moving over onto Cyberpunk.”
Finally, Iwinski commented on how Bethesda has revealed Fallout 4 after that title’s excruciating wait, and noted that CD Projekt Red is seeking to do something similar.
“We’re impressed with Fallout 4’s rollout. They came on stage and said ‘It’s here, it’s real, and it’s coming out on this date.’ We’re going to do something similar. We’re going to wait [to reveal the game] until we can show off a very meaningful piece of it.”
