Early adopters of Bungie’s first person shooter Destiny were promised that they would receive a number of exclusive perks, as a thank you for their loyalty. Bungie community manager David Dague made the pledge after the backlash the company received for locking other perks into expensive bundles. The controversy this time stems from what Bungie is adding to the collectors edition of the next expansion: The Taken King.
Only people who buy the deluxe bundle will receive exclusive emotes and other in-game items. The people who buy the standard version won’t receive these. This is standard par for collectors editions, but typically the content is available some other way to be purchased.
This is further annoying loyal customers, because this deluxe bundle doesn’t only include the DLC. It is an $80 bundle that includes the first three expansions, and the base game. Therefore the only way to get all of this bonus content for loyal players is to rebuy content they already own.
In an interview with the creative director, Luke Smith, the online community got even more upset because Smith did not seem to understand the problem. To attempt to solve this, Dague told Forbes that “Year-one players won’t get the same perks as people who buy a collector’s edition. They’ll get something better. Tune into the Weekly Update for more.” We still don’t know what this content is, but I’m hoping it fixes all this backlash before the community gets really upset at Bungie, which could be disastrous for the company.
