The official Gears of War twitter page has fans on the edge of their seats, thanks to a simple tweet earlier this week – “Three. More. Days.”
What is planned to be revealed is still a mystery. Could it be the remaster of the original Gears of War, being worked on right now by studio Splash Damage, or will it be the next-gen Gears of War 4, currently in production by The Coalition, formerly known as Black Tusk Studios?
Microsoft acquired the Gears of War IP from Epic Games back in 2014 and were rumoured to be working on the “Marcus Fenix Collection,” consisting of remastered versions of the original trilogy, but the rumours were quickly quashed by Black Tusk Studio head, and former series producer of Epic Games, Rod Fergusson. “I love the passion, but there’s no Marcus Fenix Collection”, Fergusson said in March. “We ARE working on other exciting Gears projects. I’ll see you at E3.” Earlier this year, a remaster of the original Gears of War was confirmed thanks to some rogue testers and leaked gameplay footage; however the footage was shot on a low quality camera and spoken over in Spanish, making it hard to glean new info from.
The Russian version of the official Gears of War website has helped shed light on the remaster thanks to new details published today. The website states that the game will be released on August 25th for Xbox One, making for a very short time to wait. It also mentions new achievements and new content for the campaign, along with a ‘streamlined multiplayer mode’ being run at 60 frames per second on its own dedicated servers. There is also word of new game modes including, “Team Fight”, “King of the Hill” and a new 2v2 mode – “Gnasherom” all in classic Gears of War 3 style.
With E3 well under way and Microsoft’s presentation just over the horizon, we may not have long to wait for concrete details and definitive confirmation. Stay tuned.
