Earlier this week, developer Superstar Games announced its plan for a new Unreal Engine 4-based football game, Joe Montana Football 16.

The game, so eagerly teased by Mr. Montana himself last year, will be releasing first on iOS with a version then coming to Android shortly after. The game will be releasing in phases with the final planned edition being available on PC, depending on the mobile versions popularity. Madden execs must have breathed a sigh of relief as Superstar Games stated that the game has no planned release on consoles, but didn’t explicitly rule it out.

The game will sport some impressive graphics on mobile, with gameplay leaning towards the simulation side rather than arcade. The trailer released during E3 showed generic teams facing off, with Montana being the only official player named, due to Electronic Arts holding a licensing agreement with the NFL and NFLPA that prohibit anyone else from creating a football game with real player and team names. This exclusive agreement does not apply to mobile however, leaving Superstar Games some room to manoeuvre.

Joe Montana Football 16 is currently in the pre-alpha stage of development and will be available on iOS and Android in the first half of 2016.
