Miyamoto stepping back from NX design
Nintendo developer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed his intentions to step back from Nintendo's newest handheld NX. In an interview with Fortune, Miyamoto talked about the lack of success for the Wii U console and what this meant for the NX."I’ve pulled myself back out of some of the hardware section and I’m really focused on some of the software that I’m involved in—for example, the new Starfox game,” and adds “Of course I am observing and looking at the hardware, but I am not actively participating and making decisions.”
Nintendo developer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed his intentions to step back from Nintendo’s newest handheld NX. In an interview with Fortune, Miyamoto talked about the lack of success for the Wii U console and what this meant for the NX.
“I’ve pulled myself back out of some of the hardware section and I’m really focused on some of the software that I’m involved in—for example, the new Starfox game,” and adds “Of course I am observing and looking at the hardware, but I am not actively participating and making decisions.”
Fortune’s Chris Morris suggested Nintendo implied “that they think the excitement will be back when details are announced.” on the new NX which is still a few years away from being ready. Until the NX arrives, Nintendo have to rely on Wii U sales as one of their primary consoles, although not having lived up to expectations has been one of Miyamoto’s gripes about the Wii U.
“I think the assumption is we were trying to create a game machine and a tablet and really what we were trying to do was create a game system that gave you tablet-like functionality for controlling that system and give you two screens that would allow different people in the living room to play in different ways.” he also said “Unfortunately, because tablets, at the time, were adding more and more functionality and becoming more and more prominent, this system and this approach didn’t mesh well with the period in which we released it.”
While most western gamers are favouring either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One over Nintendo’s Wii U, I think the games Nintendo release are so delightful and unique compared to western titles that Nintendo are safe until the release of their NX platform and most likely long after.
