Most PC gamers will be unable to escape the tidal wave of MOBA or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games, but consoles have been relatively free of the sudden outpouring of Dota and League of Legends clones that have inundated the free-to-play PC market in the last few years. All that is set to change with Smite, which is set to launch into open beta on July 8.
In an interview with GameSpot, Andy made some interesting comments about the state of MOBAs, and especially their relationship with consoles:
“I think you’re starting to see [the free-to-play] shift on consoles; there are a couple of decent titles that have come out recently and done pretty well on the free-to-play market. I think we’ll be next in line to help keep pushing that forward.”
In addition, Anderson pointed to games like Warframe as examples of high-quality free-to-play games that are successfully hitting consoles. Aside from that, Anderson assures players that the experience won’t be a diluted form of the PC version, and that the team at Hi-Rez were taking steps to prevent the community from being toxic.
Smite is already out on PC, and received favourable reviews from press, so if you just can’t wait for the Xbox One version to hit on July 8, then that’s your chance to experience the game right now.
