The last XCOM game, XCOM Enemy Unknown released on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 back in 2012, eventually to be followed by its expansion, ‘Enemy Within,’ to all the same platforms. With that in mind, it came as a shock to some when it was announced this week that the game’s sequel, XCOM 2, will be a PC exclusive title when it releases this November.
Speaking with IGN about the decision, the creative director at Fraxis, Jake Solomon, explained, “When we looked at what we wanted to do with the sequel, we had all these very, very ambitious goals.” To achieve those goals, such as procedurally generated maps, “we had to use all of our studio expertise … and our expertise here is PC. That’s our home, and that’s where we’re really comfortable.”
Lead producer Garth DeAngelis added, “Internally, with a relatively small team for the size of the game that we are, to be able to say we can focus on our platform that the studio has a pedigree for… As PC-only… it just made a lot of sense, and that’s how we wanted to dedicate our time.”
For those hoping for a console version however, Fraxis isn’t entirely ruling it out, Solomon saying, “We’re certainly not opposed to [console versions], but I can assure that’s something we’re not even discussing yet.”
