Announced at this year’s E3, Horizon: Zero Dawn, the new open world RPG from Guerilla, the developer behind the Killzone franchise, took many by surprise, offering a beautiful world of robot dinosaurs and an awesome female lead. Aloy, the protagonist of Horizon: Zero Dawn, it turns out, was inspired by some of the all time great female heroes.

In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine (via Gamesrader) game director Mathijs de Jonge explained, “We felt we had quite an original composition and combination of elements with the robots and the nature, so we also felt like it needed an original and strong character to go with that… One of the directions we were very interested in was a character like Sarah Connor in Terminator, Ripley in Alien or, more recently, Ygritte from Game Of Thrones; very strong female characters. That’s where we started.”

While the physical resemblance to Ygritte, (red hair and bow and all) is clear, it will be interesting to see how the other inspirations take shape. Set to release exclusively on PS4, Horizon: Zero Dawn will feature be a full open world, with no loading screens, where “the whole world is explorable. Every mountaintop is accessible, every river you can go through, every valley…”

Do the inspirations for Aloy excite you even more for Horizon? Let us know in the comments.
