Sony’s gaming division had another big quarter this year as the company released their latest fiscal report covering April-June 2015. In those three months Sony sold 3 million PS4 consoles which doubled the 1.4 million units Microsoft sold of the Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles in the same time period.
Microsoft said the 1.4 million units, of combined Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles, sold during the previous quarter was a 27% increase over the 1.1 million units Microsoft sold in the same quarter the year prior.
Sony said the 3 million PS4 consoles sold during the previous quarter was an 11% increase over the 2.7 million PS4 consoles Sony sold in the same quarter the year prior.
Since its release in November 2013 the PS4 has sold a total of 25.3 million units worldwide. In total console sales the PS4 is tracking ahead of both the PS2 and PS3 for their respective lifecycles.
Sony bumped up the projections of how many PS4 consoles they expect to sell in their current fiscal year (April 2015 to March 2016) from 16 million to 16.5 million units.
If it’s on target Sony would be poised to sell a total of 38.8 million PS4 consoles by the end of March 2016.
