Angry Birds developer Rovio has been busy. Since 2009, they’ve released over a dozen Angry Birds games, along with four others, ported some to a myriad of systems, and have grown pretty quickly. Now, the company plans on streamlining their workforce by laying off 260 employees.
“Rovio’s growth and eagerness to explore new business opportunities over the past few years has been exceptional,” Pekka Pantala, chief executive of Rovio stated. “As a result, we did too many things. In our current financial condition we must now put focus on where we are at our best: In creating magnificent gaming experiences, in producing an amazing animation movie, and in delighting our fans with great products.”
This cut in employees comes after the company laid off 110 employees in 2014. The huge layoffs is due to a huge restructuring effort by the company heads. “While we have gathered good momentum this year, especially with the launch of the Angry Birds 2 game, fundamental changes are needed to ensure Rovio succeeds in its global ambitions to be the leading entertainment company with mobile games at its heart,” he said.
Last year, Rovio’s fiscal report showed their annual profits had shrunk by up to 50%, causing the CEO, Mikael Hed to step down. Now, Rovio’s biggest project is an Angry Birds animated film to be coming out sometime in 2016.
