Announced this Friday, Lionsgate is currently creating a film adaptation of Gearbox’s Borderlands franchise.
Taking place in a fictional sci-fi universe, the Borderlands series of games is publisher Take-Two’s most successful to date, having sold 25 million copies.
“Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows,” said Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, co-chairs of Lionsgate. “The ‘Borderlands’ games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”
Little is currently known about the movie, aside from the fact it exists. However, we do know that Avid Arad and his son Ari Arad will be producing it. Avid Arad and Ari Arad have also been involved in the creation of film adaptations for the Iron Man, Spider Man, and X-Men franchises.
Strauss Zelnick, the head of Take-Two Interactive, is also confident the project will be a success.
“This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight ‘Borderlands” current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world.”
Gearbox Studios is currently also developing the third installment in the core Borderlands franchise. While little information about the game is currently avalible, the studio has promised to reveal more information during Pax Prime.
