The first image of Michael Fassbender (X-Men, Inglorious Basterds) in full assassin garb for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie has been released.
The image shows Fassbender as Callum Lynch, a character created specifically for the movie. The movie’s characters and events will be different from those of the game series, but the common theme’s – the Animus, Templars, the Creed – of the franchise will feature.
The plot follows Lynch as he discovers he is a descendant of the Assassin’s and can unlock genetic memories that allow him to relive memories of Aguilar, a 15th Century Spanish assassin of his same bloodline. Much like Desmond Miles, Lynch is preparing to face the Templars in the present day.
Fassbender will be joined in Assassin’s Creed by Oscar winner and Macbeth co-star, Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises). Both Assassin’s Creed and Macbeth are being directed by Justin Kurzel. Also starring along side the duo will be Michael Kenneth Williams (Boardwalk Empire) and Ariane Labed (Before Midnight).
Previously discussing the film, Fassbender said the Assassin’s Creed film will be respectful of the game, whilst “bringing new elements to it and perhaps our own vision of things that already exist in the game.”
Assassin’s Creed is one of five Ubisoft franchises that are getting the movie treatment, including Far Cry, Rabbids, Watch Dogs, and both Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon.
Assassin’s Creed is scheduled to hit theaters December 21st 2016.
