Though Hellblade is obviously still not anywhere near a finished product, the footage does give fans a basic idea of what to expect from Ninja Theory’s latest. Announcing the game over a year ago at Gamescom 2014, Ninja Theory, the developer behind Heavenly Sword and DMC: Devil May Cry, has shown only small parts of their upcoming title. Following Senua, a Celtic woman experiencing PTSD in the wake of Viking invasions, this footage is actually the most substantial look we’ve had at the gameplay so far.
Forgoing button combos and stylish hack and slash dances, Hellblade is all about one-on-one, brutal, heavy combat. Throughout the footage, Senua comes face-to-face with increasingly devilish enemies, the encounters appearing to be just as much about aiming your attacks as timing them. A last-stand type mechanic can be seen a number of times, along with carefully timed dodges and blocks.
The multiple voice-overs during the fights and as Senua walks around allude to the deteriorating mental state of the protagonist, her demons taunting and mocking her.
Though there is still no release date announced, Hellblade is set to be a timed PS4 exclusive, with a PC version in the later future. As we see more of Hellblade’s combat and Senua’s story in the months to come, you’ll find it all right here on Gamespresso. Until then, has Hellblade’s unique combat caught your attention, or do you still need to see me to be convinced? Let us know in the comments.
