Oculus creator responds to criticisms of VR
The rise in popularity of virtual reality headsets over the past few years is undeniable, but there have been more than a handful of big names, publicly voicing doubts over the broad appeal of VR. Last year, famously, James Cameron, director of Titanic and Avatar, called VR boring, saying, “There seems to be a lot of excitement around something that, to me, is a yawn, frankly.”
Speaking with IGN, the creator of Oculus Rift, Palmer Luckey, when asked about Cameron’s comments in particular said, “He is incorrect… All you have to do is try virtual reality to understand that it goes beyond anything you can do, even on a 3D television or a 3D movie screen.”
Luckey continued, “Being surrounded, feeling like you’re actually present in a virtual world, it gives you a much more compelling canvas to tell stories with than having to frame everything into a small rectangle you just watch. I think that speaks for itself.”
As neither of the largest players in the VR space, the Oculus from Oculus Rift, and Project Morpheus from Sony, have actually come to market yet, it still isn’t entirely clear if the common gamer will latch on to the technology as Luckey believes, or if the general consensus will be much like Cameron’s. What do you think of VR? Are you sick of hearing about it by now? Or are you still itching to get your hands on it? Let us know in the comments.
