Heading into its second week, the biographical drama Straight Outta Compton is still going strong. After grossing an impressive $60 in its first weekend the film is expected to cross $100 this Saturday.
The film topped all three newcomers quite handily, earning roughly $8 million this Friday, making it the top movie for the second week in a row. For comparison, the next close contender, Sinister 2, earned 4.5 million. Hitman: Agent 47, the film adaptation of a popular video game series by the same name, and American Ultra, Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart’s action comedy movie, earned $3 million and $2 million respectively. Both films were outperformed by Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation, which is in its fourth week.
Straight Outta Compton was directed by F. Gary Gray and revolves around the hip hop group N.W.A. CNN noted that film was particularly popular among minority groups, 46% of audiences were African-American, and only 23% white. Straight Outta Compton is just another of Universal Studios many hits this year, with movies like Jurassic World, Furious 7, and Fifty Shades of Grey.
