Super Mega Baseball was released prior for the PS3, Ps4, and Xbox One. The game was developed by Metalhead Software, an independent developer. It’s continued success eventually led it to arrive on the steam store. The game became available yesterday, August 21st. During the first week of launch, it will be available at a discounted price. At this moment the game is $17, but will go up to 20 after August 27th. The titled was altered slightly when an update was released. The new name is Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings.
Not only does it manage to be displayed in a humorous and light-hearted way, but the game’s mechanics are fun. Little time feels wasted when playing the game because of how quick the plays go by. No one will be complaining about the delay between pitches. Occasionally, when the ball is hit it, will move in slow motion then return to normal speed. This feature makes the game feel incredibly intense.
Metalhead cofounder Scott Drader stated, “Super Mega Baseball to us is a celebration of baseball and its culture, and I think we’ve also done the sport justice from a simulation perspective.” There is even a gameplay trailer that explains in depth the rules for baseball. This is done, so even people who aren’t fans of sports can still understand and play the game. According to Steam, “the fundamentals of baseball are well represented and if someone isn’t familiar with the rules, they will be after playing Super Mega Baseball.”
Teams and players have unique and funny names. Some funny team names are the Beewolves, Overdog, Sirloins, and more. There aren’t any real team names such as the New York Yankees or Mets.
The new version has more stadiums and better gameplay. Super Mega Baseball doesn’t have online gameplay; however, it does have up to 4 player local co-op. I think that’s pretty cool. I almost always support a game to have 4 player local co-op.
The game has a wide range of difficulty settings, ranging from 0 to 99. 0 would be the easiest difficulty setting, and 99 would be the most difficult one. The game’s controls are easy to learn, but it is essential to become greatly adept in the game to overcome higher difficulty settings.
Every team in the game has a specialty. Some teams are power hitters, contact specialist, defensive specialists, and more. Every character has their more or less unique stats. The characters profile cards are easily viewable in the game, and they contain their stats. They even have a mojo meter.
According to IGN,
Character models, however, look like they came from a Wii Sports game, and their limited customization options mean you can expect to see slight variations of the same faces over and over. In fact, the presentation in general is a bit lackluster. The menus are generic, the cut scene animations are repetitive, and the music is grating, which makes it more suitable for short game sessions.
Super Mega Baseball doesn’t have many modes to play with, but the season mode has much depth. Once a game is completed, characters can be leveled up. Additionally, coaches and trainers can be hired to further increase your team’s stats.
