Say what you will about Disney, but they get companies to actually start doing something. The Star Wars series has arguably been stagnant since 1985, and unarguably been stagnating in its own waste since the release of The Phantom Menace. As well, George Lucas’s attempts to bring back the original trilogy were met with ire due to his disposition to adding digital effects and tampering with the original films. Now, a rumor has surfaced that LucasFilms might be releasing the original, unaltered versions of the original trilogy on Blu-Ray.
There definitely has been rumors of such a thing before. However, the rumors hold more weight to them than ever now that Disney is releasing Star Wars Episode VII later this year. As well, a tweet sent out by Empire Magazine seems to confirm the rumor, stating that “At a Q&A tonight John Landis dropped that Disney are finally going to re-release the theatrical cuts of the original Star Wars trilogy.”
There also have been rumors that Disney will be showing the original films in theaters sometime soon, so it could end up being a goose chase, or more appropriately a Millenium Falcon chase. The rumor is strengthened by the fact that John Landis spoke directly with George Lucas on the matter. Lucas has been consistent on his stance over the altered films, but with Disney at the helm, a change might be coming for the Star Wars trilogy. All we know for now, however, is that these rumors have given us all a new hope.
