Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s PS3 and Xbox 360 developer says that their version of the game will come in at 30fps compared to the 60fps that the PS4 and Xbox One versions will have.
Main developer Treyarch is working on the version of the game that will be shipped for the latest generation of consoles, PS4 and Xbox One, while Beenox and Mercenary Technology is working on the port to the previous generation of consoles, the PS3 and Xbox 360.
“I’d say that we tried to hit that target [60fps],” Beenox creative director Thomas Wilson said in an interview with Develop, “It becomes harder when you’re working on current gen platforms. We’re basically looking more at something like 30fps. But still, the experience is very enjoyable, otherwise it’s not Call of Duty.”
“What we do is we basically, step by step, reduce the polycounts on each asset, reduce the amount of memory that each effects will take, and then eventually we make sure that we maintain that core experience intact,” Wilson said, “The challenge really is to make that fit in memory, make sure that the experience is good and that you have a great frame rate.”
This isn’t the first cut to be made to the previous generation of hardware, Treyarch recently revealed that the Campaign mode will be absent from the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions because of hardware limitations for “the ambitious scope” of what they’ve created with the coop Campaign.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 launches November 6 on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
