PDP reports their having worked closely with Sony, so that the remote will work seamlessly for users “right outside of the box.”
The controller can power the PS4 on and off, in addition to controlling up to three other devices; the user’s television, cable box, and audio receiver.
The applications that the remote is compatible are limited as of release; the list provided by PDP is as follows:
- Blu-ray Disc Player
- Crunchyroll
- FUNimation
- HBO GO
- Media Player
- NBA GAME TIME
- Netflix
- NFL Sunday Ticket
- PlayStation Video
- PlayStation Vue
- Twitch
- YouTube
Compatibility is promised to increase through future updates.
The remote will use six AAA batteries and is cited as having a minimum life expectancy of six months under ‘normal’ usage.
Sony doesn’t seem to have any current intention of developing its own remote for the Playstation 4, which it did with the console’s predecessor. Best Buy released its own Insignia remote, though this has been met with mixed critical reception and is not a licensed device.
