Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be available to stream on Netflix in 2016 — but only in Canada. A report from Variety states that a deal between premium cable channel Starz and Disney prevents Disney titles from being streamed on any other service in the U.S.
Disney reached an agreement with Netflix earlier this year that will allow any movie released in 2016 and beyond to be made available on the streaming service, but with Star Wars: The Force Awakens releasing on December 18th of this year, the title falls in the previous agreement. Starz subscribers in the U.S. will be able to watch the latest film on Starz streaming service some time after its theatrical run has ended. Episodes 8 and 9 will be available to stream on Netflix some time after their 2017 and 2019 release dates, respectively (given the agreement with Netflix lasts that long.)
For Canadian Netflix subscribers, Episode 7 will be made available around August of next year. Disney owns the rights to every previously released Star Wars film except for the original.
