Ubisoft is feeling somewhat defensive after entertainment titan Vivendi purchased a 6.6 percent stake in Ubisoft earlier in October.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot calls Vivendi’s purchase “unsolicited and unwanted.”

“Our intention is and has always been to remain independent, a value which, for 30 years, has allowed us to innovate, take risks, create beloved franchises for players around the world, and which has helped the company grow into the leader it is today,” Guillemot elaborated in a recent memo.

Vivendi, who owns Universal Music Group along with a veritable army of other assets, is known for it’s aggressive corporate nature. Guillemot is concerned that Vivendi is going to try to take over Ubisoft, which he believes would hurt Ubisoft’s brand.

Nonetheless,Guillemot is optimistic, claiming “We’re going to fight to preserve our independence. We should not let this situation–nor any future actions by Vivendi or others–distract us from our goals.”
