The Call of Duty franchise has been a juggernaut in the gaming space for almost a decade since the original Modern Warfare came out in 2007.

It’s no surprise then that Activision should expect a large level of player engagement for newer titles that they release every year, but the big surprise is how many gamers are playing a game they released three years ago.

In a recent earnings report, Activision said that over the last three months they have averaged 12 million active users for Call of Duty: Black Ops II which is even more impressive since Black Ops II only is available on last generation consoles like the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii-U.

Activision commented directly on the level of engagement for Black Ops II and said that it’s “an unprecedented level for a game that is three years old and only available on old-generation consoles.”

In comparison, Electronic Arts recently announced in their earnings report that both Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline had a combined monthly average of 6 million active players, which is half of Black Ops II’s active player base.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is also the top requested game for Backwards Compatibility on Xbox’s Feedback site with over 100,000 votes. There has been no official word yet from Microsoft on if or when Black Ops II would be added to the Backwards Compatibility Program.
