Sony recently confirmed that it has been working on PlayStation 2 emulation technology in order to bring titles from the old system to the PlayStation 4.
DigitalFoundry reported that some of the titles that were released with the Star Wars Battlefront PlayStation 4 bundle have been running through emulation software. The titles include Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Racer Revenge.
“We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,” Sony told Wired. “We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”
DigitalFoundry was able to discover that the classic titles were running under emulation and not simply re-mastered, because the PlayStation 4 OS tells users that the PlayStation 4 Dualshock 4 emulates the start and select buttons and there is a system in place to emulate the old systems memory cards.
It also appears that Sony upgraded the resolution on the old games’ graphics and upgraded the frame rate to 60fps. Check out the full video from DigitalFoundry below:
