Valkyria Chronicles made its way to PS3 back in 2008, the Japanese tactical role-playing game meeting rave reviews, and now Sega has announced not only a sequel is in the works, but we will also see a remaster of the game.
Set in a fantasized version of WWII Europe, Valkyria Chronicles spawned multiple mangas in Japan, along with an anime and two sequels on the PSP.
Launching for PS4 on Febuary 10th in Japan (no western release date confirmed yet), Valkyria Chronicles Remaster will feature “high-resolution graphics, as well as downloadable content and trophies” along with access to a demo for the newly announced console sequel.
The sequel, titled Valkyria: Azure Revolution, was revealed by Famitsu, via Gematsu, and will take a bit of a departure from the original. “With the discovery of the azure mineral Ragnite, the powerful Rus Empire achieved rapid industrial development and expanded its territory. Jutland, a small country, is economically blockaded by the large country, and advocating ‘independence and freedom from colonial rule,’ strikes the empire army’s base,” the game’s description reads. While Valkyria Chronicles utilized a turned based combat system, Azure Revolution is said to utilize “a real-time battle system with added simulation elements.”
Speaking with Famitsu, director Takeshi Ozawa said, “We wanted to do something new using Valkyria, and one of the things we’re putting in is a real-time system. Initially, we were considering real-time strategy, but we went with an RPG because we think that’s what more users will want to play.”
The difference is so distinct, Chief Producer Youichi Simosato stated, “I want them to become known as the Battlefield series and Revolution series.” The direct translation of Valkyria Chronicles’ title in Japanese is Valkyria of the Battlefield, while the direct translation of Valkyria: Azure Revolution’s title is Valkyria of the Azure Revolution.
Valkyria: Azure Revolution is set to hit PS4 in Japan in winter of 2016. No western release window has been announced yet.
