On the stage of the Playstation Experience keynote today Randy Pitchford, Gearbox Software’s CEO, announced an open beta for the studio’s upcoming first person shooter Battleborne. The beta will be available to PS4 owners in “early 2016” and players who participate will receive an extra character after the game officially launches.
In addition to the beta, Pitchford announced split-screen co-op play for Battleborn, and a new character for the game. The new character, named Toby, is a mech-piloting penguin sporting typical Gearbox attitude of borderline annoying sass.
Toby is the 16th of 26 characters announced for Battleborne. The marketing about Battleborne has emphasized the difference in play between characters with Gearbox going so far as to coin the phrase “Hero Shooter” to describe the game.
Battleborne is slated for release on May 3, 2016.
