While it was joked about in the first film, Spaceballs 2: The Quest for More Money might actually become a reality.
The virulent popularity of Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens has awoken Mel Brooks to the idea that, maybe this next trilogy of Star Wars films could use a new spoof film of them. On a podcast called “Take A Knee,” Mel Brooks mentioned that there is a sequel that’s in the works, although it’s most likely only in pre-production at best.
“And I’m thinking now, if I said, if I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out, you know, maybe a couple of months later, Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, I’d have a big weekend, you know, no matter what, even if it fell on its ass and you know, didn’t get that money back,” Brooks stated during the podcast.
Doing a sequel would be quite difficult, being that a fair amount of the original cast isn’t around. John Candy (Barf), Joan Rivers, (Dot Matrix voice), Dick van Patten (King Roland), and Dom DeLuis (Pizza the Hutt voice) have all passed away. Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet) has also retired from acting. But this might not be enough to stop Mel Brooks.
“But that first weekend, the anticipation of seeing Spaceballs 2, would, you know…I still have Daphne Zuniga and I still have Rick Moranis if he’d do it, and I’ve still got me.”
Nothing has been fully confirmed, though, other than Mel Brook’s word, so only time will tell if this cash-grab sequel will come to fruition.
