2016 is set to be the year of virtual reality and Oculus started off the year strong by delivering some big announcements about their VR headset, Rift.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey took to Twitter yesterday to talk more about the Rift and the pre-ordering process. Pre-orders for the Rift go live today January 6th at 8am PST/11am EST.
Gamers who pre-order the Rift will not only get a free copy of EVE: Valkyrie, but they will also receive a guaranteed spot in line for the Touch feedback controller which releases in the second half of 2016.
Luckey also confirmed that the Rift will be sold as with a subsidized price meaning that the company will sell the product for less than what it costs to make. This is common practice in gaming with companies like Sony and Microsoft selling their hardware for a loss so they can gain market share and revenue with direct games sales and licensing deals for games.
Luckey also said that they will keep taking pre-orders without the risk of “selling out.” So if the company runs out of physical units they will shift back the delivery date to accommodate the demand. That’s good news for people who might have worried about missing out of the pre-order, but gamers who are on the fence about getting a unit shouldn’t wait too long, there’s no word yet on when the company will close the pre-order process.
