How close are we to the next console generation?
Perhaps not as far off as some think, according to analyst Michael Pachter, who believes the next consoles could debut as early as 2019 or 2020.
“I would be surprised if we had a next-gen console in 2018; we might have one in 2019,” the analyst predcited during the latest edition of Pachter Factor. “We will have one by 2020, so I think seven years [for the current generation] is a lock. So, it will last longer than five years.”
Pachter previously predicted that the PS4 and Xbox One would be the final console generation that is presented the way we know now, arguing that future “consoles” would solely be a CPU/GPU connected to a television. His predictions are based on the arrival of 4K televisions in most modern homes.
“So, once everybody has a 4K TV. I think that’s when you get a console cycle where you actually make things that are in 4K,” he added.
