Though a less than stellar month overall sale wise, February saw Far Cry Primal claw its way to the top of the pack.
In our review of Far Cry Primal Gamespresso editor Jesse Stafford explained, “The more I explored Oros and completed side-quests, the more I enjoyed my time with Primal. As darkness falls, pack creatures become far more vicious, posing a very real threat to your survival. The atmosphere becomes tense, and you can do nothing except tread carefully with your spear ready.” That said however, he found it to be “a good experience if you’re looking for a game to tide you over until your next big release, but unfortunately not worth the $60 price tag associated with a AAA title.”
According to the NPD Group, (via VG 24/7) in total, gamers spent $303.9 million on games last month, a decrease of 10% since last year.
Other than the usual mainstays of Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Minecraft, the interesting portions of the top ten list came in the form of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm taking forth, LEGO Marvel Avengers sitting at sixth, Street Fighter V in seventh, and Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright cracking the list at ninth.
Since the NPD only counts retail, it’s worth noting Street Fighter V did not see a retail release on PC, leaving its retail PS4 sales alone to bring it into the top ten. Likewise, Fire Emblem was broken into three SKUs: Birthright, Conquest and the bundled package. NPD’s Liam Callahan said, if all three had been counted together, Fire Emblem Fates would have come in third in the list.
Emphasizing the growing fan base of the series overall, he explained, “The combined first month sales of Fire Emblem Fates would more than triple the first month sales of the next-highest game within the franchise, Fire Emblem: Awakening.”
Here’s the full top ten:
- Far Cry Primal (PS4, Xbox One)
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
- Grand Theft Auto 5 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
- Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm (PS4, Xbox One)
- NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)

Last month again saw the PS4 reign as the best-selling console, even as console sales overall took a dip from last year.
