At a panel at the SXSW Gaming Expo, Telltale gave some details about the upcoming series. The developer explained that there will be a choice system that will affect both Batman and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne. The team stated that they want to explore what the consequences are of the player’s actions when decisions made as Bruce Wayne have an impact on the Caped Crusader, and vice versa. The studio also stated that the series will give a fresh interpretation of the universe in current times, and will not be tied to any existing Batman games, films, or comics.
The story will focus on Bruce and Batman, and will not examine the extended “Bat-family,” such as Robin or Nightwing. While the villains are being kept under wraps, players can expect series staples such as Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon, and Vicki Vale. Certain characters will have a deep personal relationship with Bruce in his private life, and decisions made as Batman or Bruce will affect their paths towards redemption or corruption.
Telltale has stated that they are committing to a non-photorealistic interpretation of the universe, enhancing their engine and technology to deliver a living comic book art direction. The game will receive an M rating, and will have a cinematic approach that feels like a R-rated film.
Batman: A Telltale Game Series will release sometime this summer. So far, the only confirmed systems are PC, Mac, and mobile, though it will likely come to other systems.
