Earlier this week, Japanese newspaper Nikkei published a rumor that Nintendo was planning on ceasing Wii U production in 2016 in order to make room for their upcoming console, the NX. Now, Nintendo is denying that report.
A Nintendo spokesperson has stated that the rumors were from outside the company, and that production of the Wii U will continue. “This isn’t an announcement from our company,” the spokesperson stated. “From the next quarter and thereafter as well, production [of the Wii U] is scheduled to continue.”
Nikkei had reported that Wii U production was going to cease by the end of the year. The paper stated that this was due to a lack of popularity and the notion that the console would not be able to stage a comeback. They also stated that companies that make Wii U parts had already ceased production on some of the console’s components.
The Wii U was released in 2012. The console has sold over 12 million units worldwide. Nintendo has not given many details about their upcoming console, the NX, though analysts predict that it will launch later this year.
