As a follow up to their most recent game, the strange but endearing New ‘n’ Tasty, Oddworld Inhabitants has announced Oddworld: Soulstorm.
What the developer calls a “pensive platformer”, the new game picks up directly from the last. After the overthrow of RuptureFarms and the liberation of his people, Soulstorm follows New ‘n’ Tasty’s Abe as he leads his fellow workers out into the desert, “without food, water or a place to call home.”
“There was a deeper, darker, and more sinister story that we never got to tell,” Lorne Lanning, the series creator explained. “Soulstorm gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle.”
With that in mind, “Abe has a long way to go and plenty more adversity ahead. Soulstorm is going to be a much heavier trip for him.”
“We think Oddworld fans are really going to dig what we’re brewing,” executive producer Bennie Terry said, “and we’ve got some great surprises in store this time around we don’t think anybody’s going to predict.”
Teasing the game, Oddworld: Soulstorm’s website adds, that it will be a “big visual and cinematic leap aiming to break new ground for Oddworld.” Likewise, the developer promised, “intelligent new mechanics, twisted new devices enabling highly explosive deviousness,” and “a dark parable that tells an epic tale of a volatile society pushed to its limits.”
