Sony targets PlayStation VR for the mass market
With PlayStation VR, Sony has admitted that while their peripheral may not be as powerful or high-end as competitors such as the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive, the company believes their product will be more open to mass market appeal.“If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR,” PlayStation executive vice president Masayasu Ito told Polygon. "However, [the Oculus Rift] requires a very expensive and very fast PC. The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4. It’s more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable. This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It’s for the mass market.”

While the Oculus Rift will sell for $599 and the HTC Vive for $799, Sony has previsouly commented that the price of PSVR will be on par with a new gaming platform, leading many to speculate that the price will hover around $400, or the price that the PlayStation 4 sold for at launch. The company will most likely reveal a date and price tag for the device at the PlayStation VR event that is planned for next week.
