Resident Evil: Revelations producer reflects on the series for its 20th anniversary
Continuing its Resident Evil 20th anniversary retrospective interview series, the publisher is reflecting on the second act of the franchise. For the first three major titles in the franchise, there was a theme of fear and horror. Kawata, however, would be a part of the series’ biggest evolution toward big-budget entertainment and gameplay, starting with RE4 and the titles that followed after.
Kawata admits to the changes in the interview, but states that horror is still at the core of the franchise. He also states that Revelations, which was originally developed for handheld, helped push the series’ graphics and gameplay, carrying on the spirit of the original games.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise. The first game released on the PlayStation in 1996. Since then, the franchise has produced a number of sequels and spin-offs, and has reached a large number of platforms.
