GT Sport dev: “we could have called it Gran Turismo 7”
In Gran Turismo's lifespan the tradition has often been that a main, numbered game in the series like Gran Turismo 5 would come after a Prologue game which would act as a taster for the main event. A bit like the way Metal Gear Solid Ground Zero led to Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain. Alas, change is in the air. The new Gran Turismo game on PS4 is simply called Gran Turismo Sport, but Polyphony CEO and GT Sport producer Kazunori Yamauchi has confused things a little by suggesting that it could have been the seventh main Gran Turismo game after all. Speaking in Edge #295, he had this to say."Thinking about it now, we could have called this one 7. We're not aiming to fight for a share of a limited race game market. We're working to expand that market. Before Gran Turismo 1 came out, the worldwide racing game market was about one million players, so it wasn't that big to begin with. I've always made Gran Turismo to try to expand that."

Needless to say, the game won’t be changing names anytime soon; that would be a nightmare for marketing purposes. Nevertheless, it’s strange why Polyphony didn’t just call it Gran Turismo 7 after all.
