The decision made by the company to not show off their upcoming console, codenamed NX, at this year’s E3 was baffling to many – but it may in fact be because Nintendo fears if they reveal it too soon, others may imitate it.
That’s according to Shigeru Miyamoto from a recent investors meeting (the quote translated by famous Twitter user Cheesemeister).
“Normally we would’ve shown the NX at E3, but we didn’t,” Miyamoto said. “We’re worried about imitators if we release info too early.” This quote suggests that the NX is clearly more than just a standard gaming console.
However, this isn’t all that Miyamoto was up to at E3, as he also revealed during a shareholders’ meeting that the big N may be looking into VR.
“I heard VR was a hot topic at E3, so I went to check it out. It was on display, but it wasn’t what I expected,” a quote translated by Cheesemeister said. He added that at this point, while Nintendo is researching the “core technology” of VR, it ultimately may not match the vision that the company is going for.
“Long play sessions are an issue,” Miyamoto said. “We want to release something that can be played for long periods, carries value, and is affordable.” He added that the company “want[s] parents to feel at ease.”
As for now, the Nintendo NX is slated to be released in March 2017.
