Special rewards for doing particularly well, the golden weapons are meant to be status symbols for the best of the best. Originally surfacing on Reddit, thanks to the Korean Overwatch public test region (PTR), the images show the new variants of weapons for every character. Since the images first appeared, Blizzard has opened a worldwide PTR, allowing PC players to jump into the pre-release ranked mode.
As it’s structured right now, players will gain access to Competitive Play at level 25. They will then compete in 10 placement matches, after which they will receive a skill rating between 1 and 100. At the end of each two-and-a-half month season, your performance will be rewarded with sprays, player icons, and Competitive Points. Those points are then used to buy the cosmetic golden weapon skins.
Currently only available on the PC through the PTR, the mode will likely remain largely unchanged in the next retail patch on all platforms. Blizzard has yet to announce an official release date.
