Speed-running became a more common trend for gamers after the rise of the digital age, YouTube allowing players to show off how fast they could beat certain games. Despite this, most games tend not to cater to speed-runners and certainly aren’t made with them in mind. Not so for Yooka-Laylee. If you are one of those gamers who loves to see if you can beat the world record for a game’s completion time, read on.
When he recently spoke in Edge #294, creative lead on Yooka-Laylee and co-founder of Playtonic Games – Gavin Price – pointed out that he “wants to watch people reply the game and attempt existing challenges with the abilities that you earn throughout the game,” implying that there will be a special new game + mode specifically for players who want to run through it fast.
“You see some really creative feats going on in speed runs, where you wonder how on Earth they’re doing it – even to the stage where they’re breaking the game to bug through it. I love that stuff. So while we’re creating this crafted experience, we are actually thinking of ways to break that formula up”.
As someone who tends to play games at a slower pace, I don’t care much for speedrun features myself, but is interesting to see the developers incorporating a mode that will actually allow players to ‘break’ the game and find workarounds in certain areas.
