A curious new software update popped up for the PlayStation 4 and according to the PlayStation forums, the only addition is that it ‘improves the quality of the system performance’. Comparing this to previous updates, this one seems rather lacklustre, especially for a 300MB update.
The last system software update 3.5 had features such as friend notification, remote play between the PlayStation 4 and PC, scheduled events and the ability to appear offline. With the most notable change being the improvement of system performance, it would seem that there was a persistent issue some users encountered that has now been rectified.
If not on automatic, you can download the new update as advised on the forum:
To update the System Software using your PS4 go to [Settings] > [System Software Update] and click ‘Next’ and then ‘Update’.
We should be expecting several more updates as the foundations are laid for the next PlayStation console. Aforementioned hardware is not expected to appear this year, but news and announcements are expected to come out later this year at events such as Gamescom. The currently known facts about the new device is that it is still a part of the PlayStation 4 family, has been called ‘Neo’ and will run at 4k resolution.
