In what is hopefully a move towards a unified gaming experience for all users on every platform, CD Projekt Red wants to get cross-network play between the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One for their upcoming card game Gwent. In an interview with IGN, the team have commented on Psyonix’s successful cross-platform connection between Xbox One and PC. Stating how they hoped that Rocket League would “pave the way” for more cross-play initiatives such as these. It has already been confirmed that the Xbox One version of the card game will have cross-play with the PC version of the game. The team have gone on to state that “All we need is the green light from Sony”.
With Microsoft’s desire to break down the walls between console cross-play, Sony’s answer is still yet to be revealed. With games starting to suggest and encourage this feature, it ultimately relies on the players and how much they want the feature for not just games like Gwent, for future games by different developers. Even CD Projekt Red’s CEO Marcin Iwinski have echoed the same mindset, that “at the end of the day, this is for the players, isn’t it?” Psyonix’s Vice President Jeremy Dunham expands on this and expresses how “the more companies that show the world that they’re interested in that sort of thing, and the more communities that get behind it, the more likely it is that it’ll happen”.
The dream of being able to play against friends with different consoles could be a reality. The only thing that needs to happen is that players have to voice their desire and make the feature a reality.
