Microsoft will remove inactive gamertags after five years
Recent changes to Microsoft's Service Agreement will change how Microsoft treats Xbox Live accounts. specifically its Gamertag. Gamertags that have been inactive for a certain period of time will be deleted. In a statement“In the Microsoft Account or Skype Account section, we’ve added a requirement that you must sign into the Xbox Services at least once in a 5-year period to keep the Xbox gamertag associated with your Microsoft account,” the new rule reads. “We’ve also added that if your account is compromised, we may be required to disable access to certain content.”

“In the Microsoft Account or Skype Account section, we’ve added a requirement that you must sign into the Xbox Services at least once in a 5-year period to keep the Xbox gamertag associated with your Microsoft account,” the new rule reads. “We’ve also added that if your account is compromised, we may be required to disable access to certain content.”
The amendments made to the Service Agreement won’t take place until September 15th, but it’s unsure whether the five year inactivation rule will apply for any Gamertag that hasn’t logged in since 2011 or whether it starts on September 15th.
Anyone’s purchases and other information should still be safe, though. Even though the Gamertag will be deleted, the player’s purchases and achievements should be safe from deletion.
Along with these changes, Microsoft has added “a prohibition on posting terrorist content” and “clarified procedures for automatic renewal of Services.” You can check out the rest of the changes Microsoft made to their Service Agreement on their website here.
