A new 3D Sonic The Hedgehog game is in the works, developer Sega announced at last week’s San Diego Comic Con.
During a recent livestream celebrating the series’ 25th anniversary, “Project Sonic” was revealed to be in development for PS4, Xbox One, PC and the Nintendo NX. Sega plans to officially revive the character for the current generation with this new 3D title set to come out next year.
According to Sega, the new 3D game from the team behind Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations will be a “brand new experience.” A brief trailer for the game was also revealed, showing that the game may share some similarities with Sonic Generations, pairing together the old and new versions of Sonic the Hedgehog during “the darkest of times.”
No other details were given for Project Sonic other than a perspective holiday 2017 release date.
Project Sonic was not the only game Sonic revealed during the event. Coming a bit sooner is Sonic Mania, a completely separate experience that will see a return to the original 2D design of the Sonic series, available in Spring 2017 for PS4, PC and Xbox One. Sonic Mania will come from a collaboration between SEGA, Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games
